Definition

The lid switch is the safety switch on a top-load washing machine that tells the control board whether the lid is closed. When the lid is open the switch is in its open position and the spin cycle cannot start — a key safety feature that prevents injury from a fast-spinning drum. On older washers, the lid switch also enables the agitate cycle. When it fails, the washer fills with water but will not agitate or spin.

What It Does

When the lid is closed, a small plastic tab on the underside of the lid presses down on a microswitch mounted on the top frame. The switch closes the circuit, signaling the control board that it is safe to operate. On modern top-loaders, the lid switch is paired with a lid lock that physically holds the lid closed during high-speed spin. On older models, the lid switch is purely a mechanical interlock with no lock.

Where It’s Located

Under the top panel of a top-load washer, near the front-right corner where the lid contacts the frame. Brand examples: Whirlpool/Kenmore direct-drive washers use the WP8318084 series (3-terminal switch); Maytag Centennial uses W10404050; Samsung top-loaders use a combined lid lock/switch assembly DC64-00519A.

Common Failure Signs

  • Washer fills with water but will not agitate or spin
  • Drum spins only when you press down on the lid manually
  • No click when you close the lid
  • Error code: Whirlpool F5E2/F5E3, Samsung dL/LE, LG LE/DE
  • Lid lock LED flashes but does not engage

Typical Replacement Cost

$140–$220 including parts and labor. The switch itself is $20–$70. On Whirlpool/Maytag direct-drive machines this is a 30-minute repair; on Samsung/LG top-loaders with electronic lid locks it can take twice as long.

DIY vs Pro

DIY-friendly on older Whirlpool/Kenmore washers (lift the top, two screws, two wires). Newer Samsung/LG models with combined lid lock assemblies are harder. Book washing machine repair if your washer has a digital display and a lid lock light.
