Definition
The door lock assembly (also called a door interlock) is the electromechanical latch that locks the door of a front-load washer or dishwasher during operation. It does two things at once: it physically prevents the door from opening mid-cycle, and it tells the control board that the door is closed so the cycle can start. When it fails, the cycle will not start or the door will not unlock at the end.
What It Does
When you press start, the control board sends 120 V to a small PTC heater or solenoid inside the lock. That actuator drives a lever that engages a hook on the door, mechanically pinning it shut. At the same time, internal microswitches close to signal the board that the door is locked. At cycle end the actuator releases the hook after a short delay (front-loaders typically have a 1–3 minute delay so the drum can come to a complete stop).
Where It’s Located
Front-load washer: behind the door boot on the right side of the door opening (Samsung, LG, Whirlpool Duet, GE). Dishwasher: at the top of the tub between the door and the tub frame (Bosch, Whirlpool, KitchenAid). Brand examples: Samsung DC64-00653, LG EBF61315801, Bosch 00611475.
Common Failure Signs
- Washer or dishwasher will not start — door light flashes
- Door will not unlock at the end of the cycle
- Error codes: Samsung dE/dC, LG dE, Whirlpool F8E2, Bosch E01
- Audible click but the latch does not engage
- Door appears closed but the appliance acts as though it is open
Typical Replacement Cost
$160–$280 including parts and labor. The lock itself is $45–$130. Many cycle-start failures turn out to be the door lock rather than the control board — testing in this order saves customers hundreds of dollars.
DIY vs Pro
Moderate DIY on washers (work through the door boot opening — tedious). Easier on dishwashers (top of the door, often accessed by opening the inner door panel). Verifying that the lock is bad versus the wiring or control board signal requires a multimeter. Book washer repair or dishwasher repair.
