Definition
The drive motor is the electric motor that turns the drum of a washing machine. In modern front-load and high-efficiency top-load washers it is a brushless DC inverter motor that bolts directly to the back of the drum. In older belt-drive washers, the motor connects through a belt to a transmission. When the drive motor fails, the washer fills with water but the drum will not agitate or spin.
What It Does
During wash, the drive motor turns the drum or agitator at low speed (around 40–60 RPM) with reversing rotation to tumble or agitate the laundry. During spin, the motor ramps up to between 800 and 1,400 RPM to extract water by centrifugal force. The motor receives precisely controlled voltage and frequency from the inverter board or main control board to manage speed and torque.
Where It’s Located
Front-load washer: bolted directly to the back of the outer tub on a metal flange. Brand examples: LG WM-series and Samsung WF-series use direct-drive BLDC motors; Whirlpool Duet uses a belt and motor combo. Top-load HE washer: Maytag Bravos and Whirlpool Cabrio use a direct-drive motor under the tub.
Common Failure Signs
- Washer fills with water but drum does not spin or agitate
- Loud grinding or buzzing during spin
- Burning smell from the back of the washer
- Error code related to motor or hall sensor (Samsung 3E, LG LE, Whirlpool F7E1)
- Drum spins by hand but motor will not drive it under load
Typical Replacement Cost
$280–$550 including parts and labor. Brushless direct-drive motors on Samsung and LG are $180–$380 in parts alone. Older belt-drive motors are cheaper at $90–$180 in parts.
DIY vs Pro
Pro repair. Accessing the drive motor requires laying the washer down or pulling it forward and removing multiple panels. The motor is heavy and aligns with a splined hub that must be torqued correctly. Verifying that the motor is actually the failure (and not the inverter board or hall sensor) requires a multimeter and the brand's service manual. Book washing machine repair.
