Definition
The door gasket is the flexible strip running around the perimeter of a refrigerator, oven, or dishwasher door. On refrigerators it contains an embedded magnetic strip and creates an airtight seal that keeps cold in and warm out. On ovens it is high-temperature fiberglass that keeps heat in. On dishwashers it is a rubber seal that keeps water in. A torn or distorted gasket lets conditioned air escape and forces the appliance to work harder.
What It Does
Refrigerator: the gasket's magnetic insert pulls the door tightly against the cabinet, creating an airtight seal. A working gasket should hold a dollar bill firmly when the door is closed. Oven: the woven fiberglass rope or silicone gasket prevents hot air from leaking out during baking, both for energy efficiency and to keep the outer cabinet cool. Dishwasher: the rubber tub gasket compresses against the door to prevent water spray from escaping during the wash cycle.
Where It’s Located
Around the perimeter of the door — on refrigerators it pulls out of a channel in the inner door liner; on ovens it sits in a groove around the door opening or attaches to the door itself; on dishwashers it presses into the tub opening or the door frame.
Common Failure Signs
- Refrigerator: condensation or frost forming around the door edge
- Refrigerator: cabinet runs warmer than setpoint and compressor runs longer than usual
- Oven: outside of the door feels excessively hot; preheat times are unusually long
- Dishwasher: water leaks from around the door during a cycle
- Visible tears, gaps, or compressed flat sections in the gasket
Typical Replacement Cost
$130–$280 including parts and labor. Refrigerator gaskets are $70–$180 in parts; oven gaskets $25–$80; dishwasher gaskets $30–$90. Some refrigerator gaskets must be ordered model-specific and have a 1–3 week lead time.
DIY vs Pro
DIY-friendly on most refrigerators and dishwashers — the gasket simply presses into a channel. Oven gaskets sometimes require removing the door. The hardest part is finding the right OEM gasket for your model. Book refrigerator repair, oven repair, or dishwasher repair.
