Definition

The ice maker module is the small gearbox-and-board assembly on the side or top of a freezer's ice maker. It contains a motor, thermostat, gears, and control electronics. It runs the full ice-making cycle: sensing when ice is frozen, energizing the mold heater, rotating the ejector arm to harvest cubes, and signaling the inlet valve to refill the tray. When the module fails, ice production stops or the icemaker keeps trying to harvest empty trays.

What It Does

After the tray fills with water from the water inlet valve, the module's thermostat monitors mold temperature. When it drops below about 15°F, the module energizes a small mold heater for 1–2 minutes to release the ice from the tray. The module's motor then drives the ejector arm through one full rotation, sweeping the cubes into the bin. At the end of the rotation, the module signals the inlet valve to refill the tray, and the cycle starts over. A bail wire shuts off production when the ice bin is full.

Where It’s Located

On the side of the icemaker housing in the freezer compartment. Brand examples: Whirlpool/Kenmore/KitchenAid use the W10884390 or WPW10122502 modules (the modern 4-pin design); Samsung uses DA97-15217D series; LG uses AEQ73110203. Frigidaire often uses an integrated icemaker assembly that is replaced as a unit.

Common Failure Signs

  • Icemaker stops producing ice but water dispenser still works
  • Icemaker only produces partial trays or hollow cubes
  • Ejector arm stops mid-rotation
  • Icemaker fills with water but never harvests, freezing into a single block
  • Heater never energizes — cubes stay frozen to the tray

Typical Replacement Cost

$200–$380 including parts and labor. Modules run $80–$220 in parts. On many refrigerators the icemaker is sold as a complete assembly (mold, module, heater, and arm together) rather than just the module — which can be a better value.

DIY vs Pro

DIY-friendly. Most icemaker modules unbolt with 2–3 screws and unplug from a wire harness. Brand-specific tests are often required to confirm the module is the failure rather than the inlet valve, freezer temperature, or water filter. Book ice maker repair or refrigerator repair.
