Definition
A hot surface igniter (HSI) is a ceramic-bodied igniter that heats to roughly 2,000°F when energized, igniting the gas that flows past it. The term is used loosely to describe both the glow-bar style (silicon carbide rod) used in ovens and the small ceramic igniter on the surface burners of some modern gas ranges. HSIs have replaced standing pilot lights in nearly all modern gas appliances for safety and efficiency reasons.
What It Does
When the control board calls for ignition, 120 V is applied to the igniter. The current flows through a thin silicon carbide or silicon nitride element, which heats to incandescence in 30–60 seconds. The gas valve opens (either by safety-valve current threshold or by direct board control), gas flows past the white-hot igniter, and combustion begins. After ignition, a flame sensor confirms the flame and the board stops powering the igniter on flame-sensor models, or keeps it powered as a redundancy on safety-valve models.
Where It’s Located
Gas range surface burners: next to the burner head — visible when you remove the burner cap. Gas oven: at the back of the cavity above the burner tube. Brand examples: Samsung NX-series cooktops use DG62-00099A surface igniters; LG uses MEE61841401; Bosch uses 00415175 on some models.
Common Failure Signs
- Oven won't heat (gas smells but burner never lights)
- Surface burner clicks normally but flame won't ignite or won't stay lit
- Igniter visibly cracked or broken
- Igniter glows orange but never bright white
- Burner ignites then flame goes out (flame sensor or weak igniter)
Typical Replacement Cost
$180–$300 including parts and labor. The igniter itself is $40–$110.
DIY vs Pro
DIY for confident owners on most gas ranges and ovens. The igniter handles brittle ceramic — never touch the white element with bare fingers (oil from skin shortens its life). Book oven and stove repair if you are uncertain.
